Jorge Negrete, also known as El Charro Cantor (Singing Mexican Horseman) was one of Mexico’s most beloved singers and actors. 50 years after his death, he is still a Mexican icon.
Off the screen, Negrete was a fierce battler for the rights of Mexican film professionals. He was one of the founders of Asociación Nacional de Actores, the Mexican actors guild, and also a founding member of Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Producción Cinematográfica, the Union of Cinema Production Workers.
He appeared in over 40 films in his relatively short career before dying at the age of 42. He is buried in the actor’s corner of El Panteón Jardín cemetery in Mexico City.
